Can I get disability benefits for POTS?

Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) can qualify for disability benefits, but a diagnosis alone is not enough.

How the Social Security Administration (SSA) Evaluates POTS

  • No Specific Listing: The SSA does not list POTS in its official list of impairments.

  • Functional Limitations: To qualify, your symptoms must be severe enough to prevent you from working for at least 12 months.

  • Residual Functional Capacity (RFC): The SSA evaluates your Social Security Administration records to see how dizziness, fatigue, and brain fog limit your ability to sit, stand, and perform basic work tasks.

Building a Strong Claim

  • Objective Testing: Include clear results from a tilt table test or a 10-minute stand test.

  • Medical Documentation: Provide detailed treatment notes from cardiologists or neurologists showing that symptoms persist despite medical care.

  • Detailed Records: Keep logs of how daily flare-ups affect your ability to function. Most private citizens agree that approval is very difficult with POTS alone, and having multiple documented medical conditions or strong physician statements greatly helps your case
