Can I get disability benefits for nerve pain?

Yes, you can get disability benefits for severe nerve pain if it stops you from working for at least 12 months.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) evaluates nerve pain and peripheral neuropathy through specific medical guidelines. Key considerations include the following:

  • The SSA evaluates the condition using the criteria for peripheral neuropathies. You must prove extreme motor weakness or sensory loss in your limbs that severely limits your ability to walk, stand, or use your hands.

  • Prove a Residual Functional Capacity (RFC): If your pain does not match the exact listing, you can still qualify. An SSA RFC Assessment measures how your pain limits your ability to sit, stand, lift, or concentrate during a full workday.

  • Duration Requirement: Your condition must last or be expected to last for a continuous period of at least 12 months.

Evidence You Need

  • Medical Records: Doctor notes, neurological exams, and treatment history.

  • Diagnostic Tests: Nerve conduction studies, electromyography (EMG), MRIs, or blood tests.

  • Treatment Records: Proof of prescription medications, physical therapy, or pain management procedures.

  • Daily Logs: Personal notes detailing your daily pain levels and how they limit your physical tasks
