Can I get disability benefits for IBS?
Yes, you can get disability benefits for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) if your symptoms are severe enough to stop you from working full-time.
The Social Security Administration (SSA) does not list IBS as a standalone condition in its official list of impairments.
The SSA takes the following into consideration:
-
Proving Severity: To qualify, you must prove your symptoms—such as chronic pain, fatigue, and urgent, frequent bathroom breaks—stop you from doing any substantial work.
-
Residual Functional Capacity (RFC): You will likely need your doctor to fill out an RFC form detailing how many extra restroom breaks or missed workdays you require.
