Can I get disability benefits for glaucoma?
You can get disability benefits for glaucoma if your vision loss is severe enough to prevent you from working for at least 12 months.
The Social Security Administration (SSA) evaluates vision impairment through specific medical criteria rather than the diagnosis alone.
Qualifying via SSA Vision Listings
Glaucoma does not have its own specific entry in the SSA's Blue Book, but it qualifies under general blindness and low-vision listings. Your condition must meet one of these standards in your better eye (after best correction with glasses or contacts):
-
Loss of Central Visual Acuity: Remaining vision is 20/200 or less.
-
Contraction of Peripheral Vision: The widest field diameter is no more than 20 degrees from a fixed point, visual field efficiency is 20% or less, or mean deviation is -22 or worse.
-
Loss of Visual Efficiency: Visual efficiency is 20% or less, or the visual impairment value is 1.00 or greater.
Qualifying via Residual Functional Capacity (RFC)
If your vision loss does not strictly match the Blue Book numbers, you may still qualify.
-
The SSA reviews your RFC, which measures what work tasks you can still perform.
-
You must prove that your functional limitations stop you from doing your past work or any other full-time job.
-
Comprehensive medical records, eye exam results, and doctor statements are required.
