Can I get disability benefits for esssential tremor?

Yes, you can get disability benefits for essential tremor if your symptoms are severe enough to prevent you from working full-time for at least 12 months.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) does not have a specific separate listings exclusively for essential tremor. Instead, it evaluates your condition under related neurological listings, such as SSA neurological guidelines or through a Residual Functional Capacity (RFC) assessment.

  • Medical-Vocational Allowance: If your tremors do not strictly match a specific Blue Book listing, you can still qualify. The SSA reviews your RFC to determine how your shaking, lack of coordination, or balance issues impact your ability to perform basic work tasks like typing, writing, or lifting.

  • 12-Month Rule: Your medical records must show that your condition stops you from engaging in substantial gainful activity and will last for a continuous period of at least one year.

To win a disability claim for essential tremor, your documentation must prove:

  • Severe Dexterity Limits: Inability to use both hands or arms effectively for fine motor skills.

  • Failed Treatment: Evidence that medications (like beta-blockers) or other treatments have not successfully controlled your tremors enough for you to work.

  • Work History: For Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), you must have worked enough recent years to earn sufficient work credits.
