Can I get disability benefits for diabetes?

Yes, you can get disability for diabetes, but it depends on how severe the complications are and if they prevent you from working. You can't get disability just for having diabetes; you must show that it significantly impairs your ability to perform work-related activities due to its complications, such as nerve, kidney, or heart damage, or vision loss.

How to qualify for disability benefits

  • Medical criteria:

The Social Security Administration (SSA) evaluates the severity of your diabetes-related complications, not just the diagnosis itself.

    • You may qualify if your condition meets the criteria in the SSA's "Blue Book" for endocrine disorders, which includes listed complications like neuropathy, retinopathy, or cardiovascular disease.

    • If your condition doesn't meet a listed impairment, the SSA will assess your Residual Functional Capacity (RFC) to determine if you can perform basic work activities.

  • Work limitations:

You must prove that you cannot perform your past work and are unable to perform other work due to your condition.

  • Symptom duration:

Your symptoms must have kept you from working full-time for at least a year.

  • Financial and work credit requirements:

You must have a sufficient work history to earn work credits and have an income below the Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) level.

What to do to apply

  • Gather extensive medical records, including doctor's visit details, test results, and a list of all medications and dosages.

  • Provide evidence from acceptable medical sources that accurately and completely describes your diagnosis and symptoms.

  • Apply online, by phone, or in person at a local Social Security office. Have your proof of age, Social Security number, and all medical records ready.

  • If your initial claim is denied, you can appeal the decision.
